Hosting Infrastructure (Isotop Version)
Isotop, Bergen
September 2024
with contributions from Jamie Donald, Maike Statz and Owen Weaver.
The exhibition was part of the ongoing Hosting Infrastructure project, which explores ways to host gatherings for discussion, learning, and conversation. Central to the project is the Hosting Infrastructure Kit, a set of yellow wooden parts designed for onsite assembly. The restricted elements provide a framework for responsive, site specific installations and 1:1 models.
The installation at Isotop evolved over the course of the exhibition, beginning as a functioning pub serving food and drinks. It was then reconfigured into a musical instrument, with wooden beams suspended like xylophone bars and thinner strips fastened to create sounds similar to a pinging ruler on a desk. Percussionist, Owen Weaver, collaborated in the development of the instrument and developed a composition which was played to a live audience.
In its final iteration, the installation became a woodworking station. Visitors, led by Maike Statz during the closing weekend, used offcuts from the kit to make practical items such as door wedges, shelves, and small home repairs.
Additionally, artist and writer Jamie Donald transformed the gallery into a workspace, inviting the public to collaborate on translating an old Norwegian text about the Spikersuppe (Nail Soup) tale.
