The Non-Human Community
2020
Hordaland Kunstsenter
Solo exhibition with invited ecologist, Freya Coursey.
The Non-Human Community was a process-based research project that gathered information about the non-human organisms surrounding Hordaland Kunstsenter. The aim of the project was to contribute to a pool of local knowledge about the community of non-human animals, plants and fungi.
The Hordaland Kunstsenter gallery space was transformed into a public studio, offering an intersection of a public library, a pub, a museum and a laboratory. For the six week duration of the exhibition Fergus and Freya conducted field research around the art centre or worked inside the public studio, processing and interpreting the information we gathered. The exhibition presented an on-going research period that also functioned as an open discussion- where knowledge could be exchanged between the artist, the ecologist, the organisation and the public. Through conversations, visitors were actively invited to contribute their own knowledge of local nature and wildlife.
Exhibition was programmed as part of Hordaland Kunstsenter’s MA week programme in collaboration with KMD. Animal specimens loaned from The University of Bergen Biology Department.
